The gauges are not only exquisitely detailed, they incorporate a unique sprocket gear system instead of traditional needle pointers. (Photo: Ford Motor Company)

That said only their shape is traditional. The gauge bezels are trimmed with sprocket gears around their inner circumference, a nice touch but it's not just for show. Rather than using traditional needle pointers, the gauges feature gear-driven trolleys scored with indicator lines that ride around the inside of the bezels matching groundspeed and rpm. A notched charcoal leather shroud arcs overtop, allowing breathing room in between, duplicated on the passenger side - a Mustang design trademark.

"These incredible interiors speak volumes about where Mustang and Ford are headed in the future," stated Mays. "The functional, contemporary look of this interior and its precise execution set a new standard for muscle-car design."

The GT concept's beautiful 3-spoke steering wheel (actually 6-spokes but who's counting), also constructed of what looks like solid aluminum billet with a hot, red leather cover, looks as masculine as the car's joystick-like shifter - that incidentally sits just below the largest boost gauge I've ever seen. Just above the bold design is contrasted by a row of delicate toggles, unusual in a modern day car but fitting in this retrospective review of an American icon. The red blooded theme, also popular in the '60s, continues throughout the cabin, most specifically on the door panels, lower dash, console and custom formed 4-point harness equipped perforated leather racing buckets.
