The matte-black shaker scoop, sitting in a cutout high on the 'powerdome' hood, is mounted directly to the intake manifold. It supplements the front grille's airflow by pushing additional air through a secondary filter box to the intake, increasing horsepower. "At first, our colleagues from other teams thought we were crazy," commented Team Mustang Head Engineer, Scott Hoag. "After all, modern engines are so well tuned and balanced, there really is no 'shake,' so people asked why we would bother with a 'shaker' hood. But Team Mustang is full of enthusiasts who know what it's like to pull a Mach 1 up next to a Chevelle SS with cowl induction and show off."

With current fuel prices and emissions ratings in mind, Ford left the 428 cubic inch big block in the past. The 2003 Mach 1 will receive a 300+ horsepower version of the current 4.6-L 32-valve DOHC V8, with a modified upper intake to accommodate the previously mentioned 'shaker' intake system, specially calibrated cams, a heated PCV valve, forged crankshaft (or cast with automatic transmission option), plus performance exhaust manifolds. Either a 5-speed manual or the heavy-duty 4R70W 4-speed automatic transmission will be available. The transmission also includes an auxiliary fluid cooler and brazed 11.25-inch torque converter to compensate for the modified engines increased output. A high-torque differential with a 3.55:1 axle ratio sits in the middle of a new rear axle.

True to the original, but much to the chagrin of many Mustang fans, that new rear axle still isn't independently sprung. Instead, new coil springs with adapted load and rate join re-valved Tokico struts and unique stabilizer bar up front. A 4-bar link system with a similar package is used in the rear except the struts are replaced with shocks. The result is a 13 mm (0.5 in) reduction in ride height compared to the current GT. Its ride is firmer too, with a more balanced ride and handling compromise. Overall, frame rail connectors have been added to stiffen the body.
