Jeff Holmstead, assistant administrator of the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation had this to say. "This is an important milestone for the automobile industry that holds the promise of cleaner air." He continued, "While there still remains much work ahead to make fuel cell vehicles a mainstream transportation option, this certification is an important first step."
Alan C. Lloyd, chairman of CARB commented, "The California certification of Honda's FCX is a tremendous accomplishment." He continued, "The California Fuel Cell Partnership - involving energy companies, auto manufacturers, component makers and government agencies - will continue to help coordinate key industry-wide issues, including infrastructure development."

That last point, infrastructure development, is the only significant issue standing in the way of a healthy hydrogen economy. To create a hydrogen infrastructure that can serve motorists with a similar convenience to what we've grown accustomed to with petroleum powered cars will require serious financial backing, in a time when governments and companies alike the world over are looking for ways to pull back on spending.

Approximately 30 examples will find their way into government fleets within Tokyo and California shortly.
