Where will they go for a fill-up? Honda has provided a single compressed hydrogen gas refueling station in each city to service these cars. Pennsylvania's Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. have developed the filling technology while local operator El Segundo will install it in L.A.

"This is a very exciting day for the City of Los Angeles as it takes a major, national leadership role in putting hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles into practical, everyday use," said Mayor Hahn. "Los Angeles City employees will use these fuel cell vehicles on a day-to-day basis, just like any other pool vehicle."

Tom Elliott, American Honda Executive Vice President.

Keeping each FCX in a controlled environment allows Honda and its small group of customers to fully test the technology before unleashing it on the public.

With that in mind, when will a fuel cell car be available at the local Honda dealer? Not too soon according to Tom Elliott, American Honda Executive Vice President.

"Certification allows Honda to place fuel cell vehicles in commercial operation." said Elliott. "We'll have an opportunity to evaluate fuel cell vehicles in real world applications and to study the development of a refueling infrastructure to support fuel cell vehicles. However, it is important to remember that significant cost, technology and infrastructure issues remain prior to the mass marketing of fuel cell vehicles."
