Like it or not the Washu incorporates a large LCD multi-information display for its navigation system, telematics, audio and climate control system. It's made accessible from a centrally-mounted track pad that works similar to that on a notebook computer. A 15-inch monitor, mounted into the ceiling, combines with a 6.1 channel surround sound DVD entertainment system for the rear seat passengers. Following the high-tech theme the car uses an ID card to deploy personalized settings and start the engine.

There's no shortage of power under the Washu's sleek hood. A 242 hp 3.5-L, DOHC, 24-valve V6 making 204 lb-ft of torque drives all wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted shift controls. A double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setup should make for capable handling enhanced by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The Washu's 10-spoke alloy wheels are covered in 225-750R540A Michelin PAX run-flat tires, which were chosen for their aerodynamic and safety characteristics.

The Washu employs some technology that is starting to show up on production cars, starting with headlights linked to the steering system to automatically point in the direction the car is turning. What's more the lights themselves are LED and come with an Automatic Focusing System (AFS). An electronic parking brake, that is actuated by the push of a button and released when the car is put into gear, is similar to such systems found in top-line BMWs and Jaguars.

In the end, does the world want a 6-occupant wagon cum minivan? Why not? If it came with the Washu's attractive design, luxury and high-tech features and impressive performance specs it would probably go over well. But still it probably won't become reality anytime soon - at least Mazda hasn't announced plans to build it.
