Interior design in mind Mazda has created a decidedly Japanese design. Its minimalist motif incorporates leather and aluminum, not out of the ordinary, while exquisite ebony wood 'kokutan' creates a tastefully distinct ambience. A popular feature in some production and other concept cars this year has been parallel longitudinally mounted glass roof panels, also featured in Mazda's concept. The resultant open airiness creates the feeling of an even larger interior capacity than the Washu already has, reducing any sense of claustrophobia to nil. Still, if less light is required the Washu's LCD dimmer glass panels can be switched from transparent to non-transparent at the touch of a button.

Additionally the driver enjoys some pretty trick technologies, enhancing the driving experience while improving convenience and safety. Drive-by-wire steering eliminates the need for a steering column, a potentially dangerous item in the case of a head-on collision. With the column no longer in the way, the Washu's steering wheel folds up and out of the way inside the adjustable instrument panel, easing entry and exit of the vehicle.

Adjustable instrument panel? The gauge package itself is more than just height adjustable. It transforms into two separate configurations, allowing the driver to choose between a sporty seating position, low and cockpit-like, or a relaxed upright position. Mazda has developed a unique lever system for its auto adjustable foot pedals to help optimize the driving position no matter which driving position is chosen, enhancing comfort and safety as well.
