But how does it measure up, literally? Rather than compare it to every midsize car available I've chosen the Honda Accord, which in Canada is number one in the class. While it doesn't look it, the L200 is actually 23 mm (0.9 in) longer than its Japanese competitor. Of course less than an inch is hardly a noticeable difference but the Saturn seems a lot smaller overall. That might have something to do with its 74 mm (2.9 in) narrower width, 24 mm (0.9 in) lower height and 35 mm (1.4 in) shorter wheelbase. Despite its smaller outward dimensions the L-Series manages a much larger trunk, 495 L (17.5 cu ft) compared to the Accord's comparatively puny 399 L (14.1 cu ft). To put its luggage capacity into perspective the Saturn's trunk is larger than that of a Chrysler 300M or Cadillac Seville. That's BIG!
It's roomy inside too, at least for head and legroom. Unfortunately its narrow width is immediately apparent, even for my small frame. Its not that I had trouble fitting in, or that someone larger would, but it feels a little more claustrophobic compared to the Accord. The Honda's interior is also put together a little better, with slightly higher quality materials and a more dynamic sense of style. I know I started the article saying how impressed I was with the L200's interior fit, finish and quality of materials and I still am, especially considering its domestic roots, but the Honda is a tough act to beat. As good as it is the Saturn comes up a bit short of the mark.
