While a common trend has been to create new retro vehicles that represent their forefathers in image only, hopefully Toyota will see fit to endow the new model with at least as much off-road prowess as the iconic FJ40.

If it has anywhere near the off-road prowess as the classic FJ40, Land Cruiser enthusiasts will be lining up for their chance to own one. (Photo: Toyota)

Purists will demand diesel power, which would be a welcome option considering the improvements made to this engine type since it was last featured in the BJ, and the fact that together with low-sulfur diesel fuel, expected to arrive at the pump around the same time the FJ Cruiser will hit the streets, emissions will be dramatically improved over gasoline powered engines. Who knows, with the brand's focus on hybrid ICE-electric power maybe the FJ will be a fuel efficiency leader like the sensational Prius or upcoming Lexus RX Hybrid.

We can only hope, and then wait to see. There's no question about one thing, when it does arrive, providing it's the real thing, Land Cruiser devotees will be lining up by the thousands to be first in the club to acquire one.
