The aggressive face gently folds into otherwise classic body lines, with distinctive front and rear wheel arches highlighting the otherwise simplistic shape. Adding some spice, two humps form right behind the cockpit as part of the hard tonneau cover, similar to those in the European market Seat Tango. The car comes together in its rounded rear with taillights styled similarly to the lamps up front.

'R' in today's modern context means fast, typified by car's with designations such as Turbo R, Type-R, GT-R, and in this case, Concept R. But what exactly is it that makes this VW fast? Behind the passenger and driver is Volkswagen's narrow-angle 3.2 liter V6, upgraded to a healthy 265 horsepower and 258 ft-lb of torque.

Getting back to that last bit, the Concept R is actually a rear wheel driven car with its engine mounted midship - the first we've seen from the German brand, concept or otherwise. The power gets to the wheels via Volkswagen's dual-clutch DSG six-speed transmission, most recently debuting in the 2004 Audi TT, ensuring rapid acceleration that should equal 5.3 seconds to 100 km/h, with a theoretical top speed of 270 km/h.

To compliment the Frozen Sky (light blue) exterior, Volkswagen has fitted the cockpit of the Concept R with an attention to detail and sense of style that compliments the exterior design. Dashboard, seats and doors are trimmed in 'Dark Earth' deer hide, bringing great attention to the center console and instrumentation finished in chrome.
