With the name so readily tossed around throughout the mid and late '90s, and the steady bevy of import competition, the luster of the GTI marque has nearly disappeared. Sparking new enthusiasm Volkswagen has prepared a 2.0-liter FSI engine that packs a much more solid punch than the 115-horsepower, 8-valve original, or the most recent 1.8T for that matter. Up 20-hp from last year's 180-hp I-4 entry GTI, the utilitarian-sounding direct-injection powerplant now produces 200 turbocharged horsepower.

Volkswagen's still holding out on the performance figures, but factoring in the low-down grunt delivered via the added displacement and a at the opposite end of the spectrum a redline that starts at 7,000 rpm, the next-generation GTI should easily provide serious thrills. Those seeking additional thrust need look no further than an updated 6-cylinder model when the production version appears.

Where the Mk V GTI breaks from tradition with the original is in terms of technology. Equipped with little more than seatbelts, sophisticated computers were left out of the hot-hatch formula. Today's version is much different, chalked to the brim with electronic aids, left, right and center. Though still front-wheel drive, and riding on a stiffened sports suspension with eighteen inch wheels, Volkswagen has implemented a safety net of features, such as traction and stability control, lest anything go wrong. Massive brakes with bright red calipers are improved by dual brake assist to quickly slow the car in any situation, without problem. Though the concept car features electro-mechanical steering and a traditional 6-speed manual transmission, upon official introduction the car should receive the option of Borg Warner's DSG dual-clutch transmission.
