The popularity of the sport utility segment is staggering. They have become the transportation mode of choice among many outdoor adventurers and families alike. And like the venerable, stigmatizing minivan, an SUV with a third-row seat is equally capable of accommodating family needs, but unlike a minivan it can competently travel backroads and washed-out trails in pursuit of fun and adventure.

The highly refined, enormously comfortable and quite capable MDX gets my nod as best mid-level SUV. (Photo: Rob Rothwell, Canadian Auto Press)
Of the many mid-level SUVs on the market, the highly refined, enormously comfortable and quite capable MDX gets my nod as a leader in the pack. It combines excellent quality, reliability, safety and style in a great looking package for a reasonable price. Not a bad combination.
