The 545i once again benefits from a variation of the 745i's superb 4.4-L V8, now with 325-hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. First to arrive for sale, however, will be the 530i's 225-hp 3.0-L inline-6. It will now be the standard power unit, velvety smooth but somewhat low on power when compared to a few others in this, and even more plebian classes. Still it manages a respectable 7.0 seconds from standstill to 100 km/h before speeding up to an electronically limited top speed of 240 km/h. There is no word yet as to when, and if, the 5 Series will become available with the 184-hp 2.5-L I-6 found in its current base 525i.

Speaking of the possibility of dropping standard features, BMW is axing its standard 5-speed manual for 2004. But don't worry sports fans, base 530i's will get an even more engaging 6-speed manual. An identical number of gears drive the upgraded automatic equipped 5, optional on 6-cylinder cars and standard with the 545i. Its Steptronic manual shift mode is better than most, expected in a BMW.

Its interior seems inspired by the stimulating Z4 roadster, with bold but elegantly clean lines, high quality plastic surfaces, gleaming metals and nothing less than genuine wood trim. Its dash emulates a bit of 7, which should be expected, but all interior lines are even more graceful than the BMW flagship - currently one of the best interiors available.

The Bayeriche brand doesn't only want to keep its customers visually satisfied, but by the inclusion of a newly developed automatic air conditioning system with individually stratified adaptive evaporation temperature control, all should be more than comfortable.
