Refining BMW's Benchmark SAV

At first glance the updated 2004 X5 doesn't look all that dissimilar to the outgoing 2003, especially from the rear. But up front a variety of subtle modifications transform its appearance, thoroughly outdating the current model.

First and foremost are new headlamp clusters that feature scalloped lower edges more cohesively integrated into the front fascia than those on the current X5. They surround a larger, revised twin-kidney grille, slightly more modern in execution but still classically proportioned. A reworked lower front fascia with larger air inlets, and at the rear new transparent taillights, pretty well sums it up for the entire exterior design. Compared to some of Chris Bangle's latest BMW creations the updated X5 is decidedly conservative, good news for those who would rather blend into the crowd than shake up the status quo.

A 6-speed manual gearbox is a positive addition to the updated model, and should add a little jump to the 225-hp 3.0-L inline 6-cylinder engine. (Photo: BMW AG)

The addition of a standard 6-speed manual gearbox will cause a stir though. The extra cog should go a fair distance to optimizing the 3.0-L inline 6-cylinder engine's overtaxed output - its 225-hp and 214 lb-ft of torque having to dig deep down inside to muster the energy needed to launch the 2,080 kg (4,586 lb) X5 3.0i, currently taking a less than enthusiastic 8.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h. The engine is wonderfully smooth though, and offers decent fuel economy by 2003 specifications at 15.6 L/100 km in the city and 10.6 L/100 km on the highway in manual trim. When fitted with the optional Steptronic equipped 5-speed automatic transmission consumption increases slightly to 14.7 and 10.8 L/100 km respectively.
