What about power? Well that depends on what trim level we're talking about. Base cars receive GM's 2.2-L Ecotec 4-cylinder, good for 140-hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Move up the options list and a 200-hp 3.5-L V6 does the motivating. The V6 reaches its peak 210 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, not bad considering the car only weighs 1,495 kg (3,297 lbs) in mid-grade LS trim.

Like the majority of GM engines the V6 is an overhead valve mill, capable but normally harsh and unrefined, with a less than enticing exhaust burble to boot. One thing that can't cause complaint is the brand's usual low fuel consumption level, with the Malibu's estimated rating at 11.2 L/100 km (21 mpg) in the city and 8.1 L/100 km (29 mpg) on the highway. Only a 4-speed automatic transmission is available, which is a shame as fuel economy and acceleration times could be even better.

Just the same most Malibu buyers won't notice. They'll be too busy reconfiguring the cabin with a front folding passenger seat and 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks at their beck and call. The driver's seat I sat in seemed to offer reasonably good comfort levels, at least for my body type, while the rear bench delivers better leg and headroom than the current model. Trunk space is relatively good for the class, with 436 L (15.4 cu ft) available when needed.
Also impressive is Chevy's remote start feature, making cold winter starts much more enjoyable from inside the house. While the majority of remote start systems are only workable if within close distance, but Malibu's system allows up to a 61 m (200 ft) range.
