If towing is expected to be part of an Envoy's responsibilities, I would definitely recommend the V8, however for drivers with fewer demands the Vortec 4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder is a wise choice. I have sampled this smooth running linebacker and found its 275-horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque to be ample for regular duties. Regardless of which Envoy powerplant spins the wheels it will be accomplished through a smooth shifting, 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This is a transmission that works in silence, without disruption and is shifted via a well located console-mounted stick.

Notwithstanding the engine choices, bringing the big SUV to sure-footed stops are four-wheel vented disc brakes featuring ABS. These brakes are powerful, although the pedal on my test unit felt a wee bit mushy for my preference. Despite the slight mushiness, the brakes were easily and predictably modulated. Although I didn't put the XUV through any epic brake testing, no appreciable fade was detected during my time behind the wheel.

ABS equipped brakes are an integral element in the overall safety of any vehicle. In the case of the Envoy XUV, safety is further enhanced with the use of dual stage driver and front passenger frontal airbags; driver and front passenger, seat mounted, side impact airbags and the Onstar, Safe and Sound plan - free for the first year. And it may not be touted as a safety feature, but I am of the view that an all-wheel drive system is a significant safety enhancement. Any system that aids a driver in avoiding a loss of control or blocking a highway due to slippery roads warrants my nod of appreciation.
