The 5.4-liter V-8 can produce 300-hp at 5,000 rpm and 356 lb-ft of torque at 3,750 rpm -- a 15 percent improvement over the 5.4-L engine. And, 90 percent of the new V8's torque is available in the 2,250 to 4,750 rpm range. The fuel economy is an estimated 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway (15.7 / 12.4 L/100 km) on the 4x2 versions, with about a mile penalty for the 4x4 versions.

And, this engine is the first to use variable cam timing. This technology allows the engine's valves to be operated at different points in the combustion cycle -- essentially optimizing the engine's performance depending on demand. The driver should only notice that there's more power when need. Variable cam timing traditionally improves fuel economy and emissions rating as well.

With a maximum standard towing rate of 8,300 pounds (3,765 kg), and a maximum payload capacity of 2,000 pounds (907 kg), the F-150 is optimized for towing and strong acceleration while hauling heavy loads. (Photo: Ford Motor Company)
The new 4.6-L Triton V8 is also available on the F-150 (and built at Windsor), producing 231-hp at 4,750 rpm and 293 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm, and attains the same fuel economy rating as the 5.4-L model - odd considering its near 1-L reduction in displacement. Due to its new electronic throttle control system, plus improved gaskets, seals and crankcase-ventilation plumbing, the 4.6-liter Triton has reduced hydrocarbon emissions.

Ninety percent of its torque is available at 2,000 rpm, optimal for towing and strong acceleration while hauling heavy loads. The 2004 F-150's maximum standard tow rating is 8,300 pounds (3,765 kg), and the maximum payload capacity is 2,000 pounds (907 kg). The optional "Payload Group" upgrade raises the payload capacity to as high as 2,900 pounds (1,315 kg) and the towing capacity to 8,800 pounds (3,992 kg).
