In the U.S. Ford sold approximately 148,000 Windstars last year, good for about 15% of the minivan market. This gave it more market share than GM's Chevy Venture and Pontiac Montana combined. But to put things into perspective the Chrysler Group holds in the neighborhood of 40% of category sales. In comparison Honda sold about 153,000 Odyssey minivans, with much smaller incentives than any of the domestic manufacturers.
Despite the competition Ford expects to maintain and possibly even increase its minivan market share with the Freestar. By first impressions the much improved model should be able to do just that and win over a more loyal following in the process.
