The 2004 QX56 also features standard engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist, seven-spoke 18x8J chromed aluminum-alloy wheels, and 265/70R18 SUV tires with a Tire Pressure Monitor System with standard warning lamp (in gauge cluster) and warning display. This can be important, since an under-inflated tire can be a serious safety issue as well as a fuel-economy drain.

The RearView Monitor package also includes Infiniti's advanced Intelligent Cruise Control, which allows the QX56 driver to maintain an appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead. This sounds like a gimmick you could probably live without, but it has vast convenience, cost and safety benefits.

You have to use the brakes less, in the first place, which saves wear and tear. Also, the driver can let the car do all of the braking and accelerating while she concentrates on what else is going on around her. Plus, it saves you a lot of boring, repetitive pedaling. Finally, this system will stop you from driving into the back of a vehicle you maybe can't see with your eyes, in fog or rain or snow. I'm a huge fan of what I call ''seeing-eye'' cruise control for this reason alone.

Igo says the Infiniti QX56 full-size luxury SUV is designed to ''take the complexity out of the buying decision,'' though I don't know that I'd spend much extra money to avoid that particular problem.

Anyway, it also means that the QX56 has very few options. They would include the Second-row Split Bench Seat Package; Infiniti DVD Mobile Entertainment System; Power Sunroof; Painted Splash Guards; and the Smart Vision Package, with the RearView Monitor and Intelligent Cruise Control.

Look for the Infiniti QX56 in Infiniti dealerships across Canada this spring. If you're in the market for a big-ticket sport-brute, you should probably check it out. It doesn't have a design to catch many eyes or features that move the yardsticks, but it is extremely capable, comfortable and well-equipped, and it is new and different.
