That same system can lower the new SUV for easier entry, exit or loading and unloading, plus it will level itself off with the front suspension when hauling heavy cargo.

But that's not all. Standard Adaptive Variable Suspension damping (AVS) reportedly delivers stellar on-road smoothness by continuously adjusting all four shock absorber damping rates in response to road surface conditions, vehicle speed, driver steering and braking inputs, plus vertical vehicle movement.

Electronic aids will come to the rescue if needed as well, including ABS brakes, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), Downhill Assist Control, Hill-start Assist Control, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution.

The new Lexus gets 17-inch alloy rims wrapped in 265/65-17 tires, said to deliver a quiet ride while being well suited for handling pavement as well as taking on the challenges of the wilderness.

The GX makes use of the automaker's sophisticated 4.7-L V8, hence the 470 nomenclature. The engine boasts dual-overhead cams, 4-valves per cylinder and an LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) rating. It delivers 235-hp at 4,800 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at a very low 3,400 rpm, the latter number being what truly matters when forced to move a heavy SUV. What's more, the GX reaches eighty percent of its maximum torque at a mere 1,100 rpm, which should pretty well allow it to idle to highway speeds.

More importantly it will allow a towing capacity of 2,948 kg (6,500 lbs), ample for most family-sized pleasure craft or camping trailers it's the highest capacity of any Lexus SUV - that's 680 kg (1,500 lb) more weight than the much bigger LX 470 can tow. The 5-speed automatic transmission's shift logic holds the GX 470 in the optimal gear while descending steep grades, another bonus when a trailer is at the back end.
