The same has to be said for exterior design. The new E-Class is superior to the outgoing model in every way. Its distinct headlamps are now raked back even further, while its overall profile is shaped like a wedge, much more athletic. The E55 ups the ante considerably yet again, with tastefully applied sculpted side skirts, a deeper front spoiler and nicely integrated rear apron. Also part of the package, blue tinted glass, LED brake lights and optional bi-xenon headlights with headlamp washers separate the exclusive model from the automaker's more 'pedestrian' offerings.
Mercedes-Benz has once again upped the performance benchmark recently set by rival Audi in its U.S. only RS6 - little good that one does Canadians as it is. BMW, of course, will no doubt be raising the horsepower stakes again with their next-generation M5, but for now Mercedes holds title.
But that said it's not all about sheer power. Without knocking BMW's amazingly capable performer, M-B cars display a refined grace distinctly their own. Its one thing to go fast and entirely another to get their in one piece, fully composed and hardly put out. That's the AMG-Mercedes difference, a philosophy that makes their cars popular among enthusiasts who value a little more luxury with their sport. It looks as if Mercedes-Benz is delivering this formula once again in the E55. It goes into production soon with a planned May certification. Cars should arrive at dealerships in June.
