| The Endeavor Limited is very well equipped, with additional features such as a DVD audio system and satellite radio expected in the fall. |
Following the techno theme a cross-shaped center stack, coated in a bright metallic finish, protrudes toward the driver and passenger, making adjustments to its efficient 3-dial climate control system and 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system within easy reach. The optional top-line 315-watt stereo with additional speaker, independent amplifier and 6-disc dash-mounted CD player is truly worthy of Mitsubishi's groovin' image, thumping out tunes with the authority of a high-dollar aftermarket system. The seats are as comfortable as they are stylish, especially if accented in the model's distinct saddle-like leather tone. They offer heated cushions when the Cold Zone package is ordered, a good idea if located in the frozen north this time of year.

| The new Endeavor, shown here in 2WD guise, is an extremely capable handler, nimble when the road starts to wind and poised even over rough highway surfaces. |
If you haven't guessed it yet, I was fortunate enough to test drive a few variations of the new Endeavor prior to its Detroit launch. I spent a spectacular day driving through the twisting highways of Southern California's hill country before getting down and dirty on a Santa Barbara beach, and I can attest that the sporty SUV performs with an enthusiasm that equals its racy bodywork. Its 215 hp 3.8-L V6 puts out 250 lb-ft of torque available from 3,750 rpm, plenty to shoot the 1,745 - 1,885 kg (3,847 - 4,156 lb) - depending on trim level - SUV to highway speeds in no time at all. While not an entirely new engine, the slightly larger block has been reinforced while the oil system is now revised. Its 4-speed automatic shifts smoothly, and comes equipped with a slick shifting manual mode Mitsubishi calls Sportronic. Unlike many rival manu-matics the Sportronic gearbox doesn't automatically upshift when it reaches its 6,000 rpm redline, but rather holds the gear while keeping revs constant. This makes it one of the best of its type available.
