Still, the new engine is 5-hp more adequate than that in the outgoing model, with 12 additional lb-ft of torque that should be noticeable when putting the right foot into it. The all-aluminum engine is also 15 kg (33 lbs) lighter than last year's, is smaller and offers reduced noise, vibration and harshness (HVH) levels. Of its many merits, highlighted are maintenance-free chain-driven camshafts, counter-rotating balancer shafts, an integrated oil cooler and a dual-mass flywheel.

The transmission choices have been dramatically upgraded too, with a 6-speed manual now standard and a new 'smart' 5-speed automatic optional. The brainy autobox includes Saab Sentronic sequential manual shifting plus adaptability to both driver input and road conditions. Its digital mapping system has also been specifically programmed to take advantage of the turbocharged 4-cylinder's strong torque characteristics.

Safety will always be a Saab strong suit, thus the 9-3 Convertible shouldn't leave those who prioritize health wanting for more. Adaptive dual front airbags are standard, along with two-stage side-impact airbags - the latter which have been designed to protect both the torso and head. The front seatbelts are now integrated into the seat frames, while Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR) automatically position the headrests to protect the neck during rear-end crashes.

Active safety features include Electronic Stability Program (ESP), brake assist (BA), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Traction Control System (TCS).
