The Touareg also features a Hill Climb Assist (HCA) function that prevents rollback on steep inclines by locking the gearbox. Not only does HCA keep the vehicle steady, but it also makes it easier to accelerate up the hill from a standing stop. While facing the other way down steep descents, the pull of gravity is counteracted by Volkswagen's Hill Descent Control (HDC). At speeds of less than 24 km/h (15 mph) on a decline of 20 percent or more, HDC automatically cuts the engine's torque to slow the vehicle and enhance control. If necessary, the brakes will be applied automatically. A couple of nice helping hands for the novice off-roader!

The Touareg arrives with a very polished suspension setup engineered to strike the ideal balance between estate-car comfort, tenacious road-holding and competent off-road capabilities. Striving toward this ideal, the base Touareg utilizes a double wishbone front and four-link rear independent steel spring suspension. However, select the optional 4-Corner adjustable air suspension with six levels of ride height and Continuous Damping Control, plus three adjustable damping settings, and you have the opportunity to experience what may be closest to that elusive ideal.

The complex air suspension system constantly monitors the distance between each of the wheels and the Touareg's body. Continuous adjustments are made ensuring the SUV's ride-height is maintained on an even keel and at a level appropriate for the vehicle's current use. On the highway, the system is capable of lowering by a full inch, which provides improved high-speed handling and better aerodynamics. The air suspension also allows the driver to vary the ride height from 162 mm (6.4 in) of ground clearance to a phenomenal 300 mm (11.8 in).
