To make sure the new model would perform off the road to Jeep's high standards, the Jeep Special Program Engineering team deliberated over what would be the ideal length to stretch it. Despite the added wheelbase and extended rear overhang, the Unlimited manages a 20 degree breakover angle, a minimum guideline for serious off-road driving.

"The Jeep Wrangler (TJ) Unlimited stays true to the legendary capability that has made the Wrangler (TJ) the icon of the brand," commented Woody. "The additional 15 inches provided the right balance to add more second row seating comfort and cargo without compromising the Jeep 4x4 capability."
As standard equipment the Unlimited features the TJ's upgraded 4.0-L inline 6-cylinder PowerTech engine, a real workhorse that also delivers an extremely smooth idle. It delivers 190-hp at 4,600 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at a very flexible 3,200 rpm. The proven 42RLE 4-speed automatic gearbox takes care of shifting duties.
Other standard items include a Dana 30 front and heavy-duty Dana 44 rear axle, as well as 30-inch tall R15 Goodyear Wrangler GSA tires on 15-inch Ravine aluminum rims. Finishing off the suspension are high-pressure gas-charged shock absorbers and a 3.73 axle ratio. Fog lamps and tow hooks also come standard.
Full steel doors with deep tinted windows are also standard, as is the padded Sport Bar, air conditioning, an AM/FM/CA audio system, fold and tumble rear seat, front and rear floor mats, next generation front driver and passenger airbags and power steering.
