Be sure to check out the transmission and engine for any abnormal sounds during both gentle and full-throttle acceleration. The automatic transmission should gear down quickly when requested, followed by a clean, precise shift up with no hesitation or 'slipping'. Remember that at full throttle, the CVT transmission feels like a badly slipping automatic transmission- so don't confuse the two.
Recall items dealt with fuel-tank straps that may break and drop a gas-tank into the roadway, a cold-temperature issue which could prevent door latches from holding the doors closed, and a possibly defective fuel filter. That's not too worrisome a list in the big-picture of family sedans.
As long as you don't need the most powerful family sedan in the class, the Five Hundred will satisfy. Look for a good deal on a used one with warranty coverage remaining if possible- then start planning some trips with the family.
