Last-gen Equinox big on size and comfort, but stick to a newer model if possible- and watch for coolant leaks
Check out the coolant overflow reservoir under the hood and look for any dirty or- sludge-like deposits stuck to the inside of the tank, which could be a warning sign.

Any used Equinox with signs of engine coolant beneath the vehicle or running down the side of the engine should be avoided, too. A GM-trained mechanic should be able to check for the warning signs of this well-documented problem in a few minutes.

Those wishing to ‘play it safe’ could have the Dex-Cool flushed for a ‘standard’ engine coolant, or opt for a 2007 or later model which offered a 160,000 kilometre powertrain warranty.

Note that for 2008, the Equinox was offered optionally with a new 3.6 litre, 264 horsepower engine.

Other issues with the Equinox can usually be ‘heard’ on a test-drive. Once you’ve confirmed the stereo is working, turn it off and open your ears.

Clunking, popping or creaking from the front-end or beneath the vehicle likely indicates a badly-worn suspension component-- like a strut or bushing. In an AWD model, turn the steering wheel sharply and drive in as tight a circle as possible, noting any unusual ‘rubbing’, grinding or clicking sounds which could indicate a problem with the transfer case or rear differential.

You’ll also want to try and get the AWD system shuffling power around, which only occurs when front wheel slippage is detected. Where appropriate and safe, find some sand, gravel or ice, and stop the front wheels on it. Stab the throttle to encourage wheelspin, and note any loud clunking, groaning or grinding noises as the rear wheels kick in. If you hear any, it may indicate a potentially expensive transfer-case or differential problem.

Be on the lookout for any check-engine lights, determining their cause if illuminated. Ensure all windows and the air conditioner work as expected, and check footwell carpeting and the spare tire well for signs of moisture or mildew, too.

End of the day, used Equinox shoppers will likely find the model comfortable, attractively priced, and roomy—especially compared to some of the smaller, pricier competition from Japan.

Wherever possible, opt for a 2007 or newer model, and have any used Equinox given a once-over by a reputable mechanic—requesting special attention to the potential 3400-engine coolant leak issues.

If everything checks out and you’re able to find newer model with some warranty remaining, Equinox can be cheaply bought with relative confidence.
