Having in the past been accused of wearing rose coloured driving glasses when it comes to BMWs, there are a few complaints with the current 3 Series. The flip-up exterior door handles always seem fragile and awkward to use. If you need any kind of storage space on the inside for the jetsam and flotsam of day-to-day driving, there just ain't any. And finally, compared to some of the other cars in this class when matched feature-for-feature, the 3 Series is not, and never has been, cheap to get into.
Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

And of course, the new 3 Series comes with new styling inside and out, which may be reason enough to go with the existing old soldier.
If you're not concerned about wearing the latest fashions, and you're someone who truly loves to drive, the 2005 BMW 325i Executive Edition sedan is a relative bargain and a good opportunity to get into a sports sedan icon.
