Conclusion
I had a blast driving this car. For automotive journalists, I think this is the
best outcome of any test. I had expectations and this car surpassed them. The Hyundai nameplate still echoes quality and reliability issues in many people's head. These outdated ideas will have to be erased from the collective memory. The new Sonata looks like it can take on the likes of the Camry and Accord head-on, the Tucson is already doing well and the new Accent should only be an improvement over the present car. It is clear that, up until now, every time Hyundai has renewed a model, the new one is a vast improvement over the previous.
The Accent5 should have been available since the beginning. It is the perfect combination of practicality and versatility. Now that it has finally arrived, it should take away sales from the Echo thanks to its improving reliability and more attractive financing plans. Even with their well-appointed interiors, the Chevy Aveo and Pontiac Wave will continue to struggle when put head to head with the Accent.
I have seen the 2006 Accent in the flesh, and it is larger, longer and similar in shape to the 2006 Kia Rio that premiered at the Detroit Auto Show. No news on the engine, however I can assume that it will share in the Rio's 1.6L 110 hp engine and the same all-new platform. Its interior volume is said to be best in class, apparently similar to that of some compacts. It sounds like another winner to me.
Good stuff:
Fuel economy
5 doors
Not so good stuff:
Overly soft ride
Light steering
