Sporty Spectra seeks muscle
Rear 60/40 split flip-folding seats add very usable trunk space. There is a well thought out tray under the rear floor which makes good use of space, although lift-over is high. According to Kia, the 5 boasts the second largest trunk behind the Matrix/Vibe twins and the biggest total interior volume in its class. The Spectra5 is probably one of the quietest cars in its category.

Technical

The Spectra5 is motivated by the same 2.0L 4 cylinder engine found in the Spectra sedan and Hyundai Elantra. It generates 138 hp @ 6 000 rpm and 136 lb/ft of torque @ 4 500 rpm. Buyers will have the choice between a rather easy shifting 5 speed manual and the electronically controlled 4 speed automatic transmissions.

On the road

The engine lacks power to be really competitive: very little torque off the line and not enough usable horsepower for passing on the highway. The situation gets even worse when the A/C is turned on. The manual transmission works well enough; the gear ratios are nicely spaced to get the most out of the engine. The automatic is a little lazy in its transactions. The shifter action is better than expected; it is fairly precise and easy to manipulate. Clutch pedal travel is short and resistance is light. The brakes respond very well and the pedal feel is comforting.

The handling behavior is impressive; the car stays relatively flat in corners and displays little body roll. Overall grip is good and the car feels comparatively solid and well planted. Generous wheel travel also provides a comfortable ride over the rough stuff. The Spectra5 is still not a Mazda 3 but it certainly is a step in the right direction.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes 6 air bags and a driver seat active headrest. ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution are optional. Midway through the lifecycle of the car, a passenger side active headrest should be added.
