Once under way, confident passing power is quickly on tap through a five-speed automatic transmission that shifts with imperceptible delicacy. Rather than following the trend toward an automatic stick with a manual mode, Lexus has equipped the ES330 with a beautifully finished gated shift plate. I have always preferred gated shift plates to manual-mode setups, and the ES reinforces this.
