Under its hood, the Concept-X is powered by a 2.0-litre inline-four with all the standard goodies featured on the current Lancer

Evolution's engine, including dual overhead cams, MIVEC variable valve timing, and a variable geometry turbocharger to deliver crushing performance regardless of engine speed or gear. At 300-horsepower, it's more than plenty to move the sedan, but frankly, including it in this concept must be the last application of the '4G 63' motor. Now pushed to its absolute limits in the current EVO IX, this is basically the same venerable unit that has powered Evolutions since the first generation arrived on the scene in 1992.

For production it is expected an all-new larger displacement four-cylinder will offer yet more power, more torque via more of that sweet, sweet boost. The partnership with DaimlerChrysler,

and Hyundai, has opened the door to the possibility of a new 2.4-litre high performance motor bearing the same technologies as the current IX motor, including variable valve timing as well as Mitsu's advanced turbos. It is not known whether Hyundai will get a version of the more powerful 2.4-litre, but being a partner in the global engine project means that such a scenario is likely.

The production version of this new engine might also be the first application of the next-gen MIVEC2 variable valve timing system, which will be making its debut at Tokyo. The larger displacement should also come in handy fighting off its arch nemesis, the WRX STI in North America, which, since its introduction has packed a 2.5-litre motor rather than the domestic 2.0-litre engine.
