The interior is accented by a backlit red gauge instrument cluster and optional satin nickel trim pieces.

As part of its premium nature, James claims, Pursuit will ''offer many features not typically found in small cars today, including air conditioning, electric rear defogger, CD player and driver information center.''

Beyond that, Pursuit will come with such optional features as heated leather seats, power sunroof, MP3 player and OnStar, the safety and security global positioning system.

Interior flexibility was a key design feature in the Pursuit, James says, and that would include easy access to the rear seat, 60/40 folding rear seats, interior access to the trunk area, and ample, versatile storage.

The most important space in a Pontiac is probably that part dedicated to the driver and her passengers, so there are ''premium seats and aggressive bolsters that contour around the driver and passengers.''

It's important to hold the ''occupants firmly in position to deliver the right balance of comfort and security while cornering,'' James explains. But this bolstering in the seatback and cushion is accomplished ''without being intrusive, providing comfort for both short and long drives. The Pursuit seats are fitted with a unique fabric covering as standard equipment.''

The Pursuit offers two race-inspired Ecotec inline-four engines -- a standard 140-hp, 2.2-liter engine in base and SE trims, and a 170-hp, 2.4-liter engine in the GT version.

Both are dual overhead camshaft engines featuring aluminum block and cylinder heads, counter rotating balance shafts, roller finger follower valve lifters, chain driven camshafts, electronic throttle control, coil-on-plug ignition, GM Oil Life System and extended life spark plugs and coolant.

The 2.4-liter engine introduces variable valve timing (VVT) to the Ecotec family, using electronically controlled hydraulic camshaft phasers to alter the relationship of the intake and exhaust camshafts as much as 50 degrees relative to the crankshaft for improved performance and efficiency.

Mated to the 2.2-liter engine is a standard Getrag five-speed manual, with a Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic as an option.
