''The compact and efficient five-speed manual features five synchronized forward gears and a synchronized reverse gear,'' James points out, while the automatic is ''engineered to deliver transparent shifts in a quiet and durable package.''
The 2.4-litre engine is connected solely to the Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic.
As good as these engines might be, they are made more useful by the fact that they're sitting in the Delta architecture, James says, because the rigid lower-dominant body structure is engineered as a single unit for mass efficiency and stiffness.
''The underbody uses high-strength steel as welded members in strategic locations for maximum strength, structural integrity, mass optimization and crashworthiness,'' James says.
The Pursuit's stiff underbody also supports a quiet ride, James explains, owing to the fact that it produces nearly 27 Hz in bending frequency.
''The rigid cockpit structure provides additional noise reduction, as well as providing load-carrying capability for crash protection,'' he says. ''All other cabin entry points for noise have been addressed with seals, carpeting or other sound-deadening materials. Engine and decklid covers were extensively engineered to reduce noise.''
The stiff architecture supports the powertrain with a torque-axis mounting arrangement that allows the suspension to operate at maximum efficiency, James notes, while minimizing engine noise and vibration. ''Additionally, the doors, trunk and hood have all been engineered to have a solid closing sound.''
While Pursuit's general inclination is sporty, James makes a point of saying that the car's ''advanced chassis systems are tuned to deliver ride and handling characteristics to fit the diverse requirements of a broad customer base.'' This means you can take it through cottage country in a hurry, or to the mall without beating yourself up.
Pursuit features a strut-type front suspension, a semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars for more exact body roll control.
Vented discs with single-piston calipers at the front and composite drums at the rear is the standard brake setup, and four channel anti-lock brakes are standard on LS and LT.
Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and enhanced electronic traction control system are available features.
Pricing will not be made available for some time but, again, GM calls Pursuit a "premium'' compact Pontiac so be ready for it to cost more than a Sunfire would have.
