No one's going to argue that the stock production XC70 is little more than a regular V70 AWD dressed up with plastic cladding and a bit of extra ride height. With that, no one's going to doubt whether or not the AT has
off-road credentials either. Furthering the car's Four-C adaptive damping system is a custom-made air suspension that offers four additional inches of ride height when called upon. This is combined with a suspension lift kit that grants another four inches, for a grand total of eight inches over the stock XC70.
At eight inches higher and 108 horses more, the XC70 AT Concept might seem like a disaster waiting to happen, but for the fact that it's been developed to be stable under all situations including higher road speeds. IPD equipped the AT with super-thick anti-roll bars for front and rear wheels that help to combat body lean in corners. Four-C adaptive damping, a new
addition to all XC70s for 2005, also stiffens the dampers in preparation for cornering, while stability control ensures that eager drivers don't bite off more than they can chew.
In the wheel and tire department, the AT Concept has been outfitted with gigantic black-painted KMC 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in gargantuan 285/50 R 20 BF Goodrich all-terrain tires.
In all-terrain driving, braking power might take the back seat to endurance, but not so with this XC70. The car features a performance Brembo brake system, comprised of 13-inch cross-drilled discs and four-piston calipers. ABS of course, is functional, ensuring swift, lock-free stops.
