The ride is everything I expect of an Audi--firm but forgiving, never jolting and never ever losing its composure. Even cornering over very rough and uneven surfaces, the A3 held on with the utmost determination. The performance low-profile tires fitted to my tester took a conservative approach to their tread pattern. Imagine slicks with a few lines carved into them for good measure. But they were a great match for the car--not only very grippy but also very quiet, adding to the polished and quiet feel to the ride. The grip is delivered with the car remaining fairly neutral even when rushed out of a corner.

Torque steer is present, though it only really tries to take the steering wheel from you if you get on the throttle too hard in first gear. As far as a 200 horsepower front-wheel drive with a turbocharged power curve goes, it's not as much of a fight as I was expecting to get the A3 off the line quickly and without drama. The stopping power is equally impressive. Nosedive is pronounced, though the stable and confident suspension makes emergency maneuvers confidently.

Audi offers recent graduates who qualify special leasing and financing options to make it easier to get into your new ride. Equipped with the Pana-roof, leather seats and steering wheel, but lacking the almighty DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) transmission, my tester retailed for about $37,900. At that price, once you warm up to the interior, I don't think you'll have any regrets.
