The brakes have a good feel to them, and the standard antilock system adds even more sure-footedness to winter or off-road conditions. There is enough pedal feel to allow for precise modulation, which is great on road but also good, for example, when descending a rocky hill or slowly making your way over a large obstacle in the dirt. Building an SUV off the platform of a car often makes it feel like something is missing, some toughness or capability having been lost in the transition. But this is what's called a crossover vehicle, meaning it combines a bit of each car and truck while offering the real benefits of both. It's done so well at this that the AJAC have called it "Crossover of the Year".
I don't get the impression that Hyundai has designed this Tucson to be a mud-slinging boulder climbing, off road monster more than they have designed it to be a spacious, confident family hauler that combines car-like amenities and truck like ruggedness. If that was the goal, they have hit it dead on.
