2006 Kia Spectra5 EX Sport Road Test

The only real disappointment about the Spectra5 is its fuel consumption. I averaged 12.6 L/100 km over the course of the week, which isn't good. In all honesty, I am driving this Kia with a rather heavy right foot, but when a car has "Sport" in its name, as in Spectra5 EX Sport, I will drive more enthusiastically. Leaving the air conditioning on all week probably didn't help much, either. You will surely get better mileage than me, but I've noticed that the Koreans still can't quite match their Japanese rivals in terms of fuel economy. They're learning fast, though (oops, I've said that already).

Attractive shape

Visually, I find the Spectra5 rather cute. The bulging front fender flares, which extend all the way to the rear of the car, give this Kia a distinctive profile compared the other compact sedans on the market.

From the front, the car isn't as distinctive, although the nostrils on each side of the grille are a nice touch. The rump of the Spectra5 looks better than the one of its four-door counterpart, in my opinion.

Conclusion

At $21,175, this Kia Spectra5 EX Sport isn't the steal you'd expect it to be, but it does come fully equipped. In comparison, a loaded Chevrolet Optra5 LT costs $19,655 but isn't as powerful or as fun to drive. A Hyundai Elantra GT, mechanically similar to the Spectra but with a softer suspension, costs $19,895. A 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT with similar equipment costs $20,035. A Mazda3 Sport GT with optional A/C but without a sunroof costs $21,395, and the Ford Focus ZX5 SES with optional sunroof costs $22,799. Both the Mazda and the Ford are more fun to drive than the Kia.

I like the Spectra5 quite a bit, and I'm always impressed by Kia and parent company Hyundai's progression in the marketplace. My overall choice in the 5-door compact segment would be the Mazda3 Sport for its impeccable finish and driving dynamics. But if you're tired of seeing all those Mazdas on the road, this Kia is a good alternative.
