Other techno goodies included an enhanced navigation system, featuring voice recognition, Bluetooth phone compatibility and a revised LCD screen that now includes the hybrid drivetrain schematics and phone interface. New steering wheel switches have been added for the phone and voice commands too.

This is one comfortable SUV, front or back. I spent most of my time in the former, but for at least an hour parked myself in the rear in order to get a feel for how the other half live. It seems I've been choosing the short end of the stick by being first to shout "shotgun", as the RX 400h's rear accommodations are wonderfully comfortably, especially with its reclining rear seatback raked rearward.

I found the 400h quieter than the 330 as well, and upon reading the press material provided found that my senses weren't leading me astray. The upgraded SUV features new gussets and reinforcements to improve rigidity, an acoustic glass windshield, a new radiator cooling fan blade designed specifically for reduced noise, and a direct gear drive for the front transaxle. All of these features reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels, making for an extremely upscale environment.

I have to say, though, while the backseat was relaxing I enjoyed my stint in the driver's seat even more, as the 400h was even more agile than the standard RX 330. This is due in part to its standard 18-inch alloy rims on P235/55R18 tires, optimizing road holding.

The roads around Hilo are much windier than those on the south side of the island, offering a great test track for the 400h to strut its top-tier technology, such as Electric Power Steering (EPS). It features decent feedback, hardly any deadness at centre and overall, quick reactions to input.
