By launching the new 5, Mazda re-enters a category of vehicles that passed on with the Nissan Axxess and Dodge/Plymouth Colt Wagon. Described as a mini-minivan, the 5 uses the vast majority of the Mazda3's mechanicals and its structure. Therefore, it inherits the same 2.3L 4-cylinder engine although developing 157 hp (3 less than the 3 Sport). Two transmissions are available: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic with manual mode. The Mazda5 is also equipped with 4-wheel disc ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and stability control. Thanks to all these elements, it combines the dynamic road manners of the 3 with more cargo space.

To match the capabilities of other minivans, it is able to carry 6 passengers thanks to a third row flat folding bench seat. It also has two sliding doors.

Price: Starting from $19,995
Availability: Summer 2005

Auto123.com's impressions:

In today's social economic setting and knowing the public's desire for economical & practical transportation, Mazda can only meet with success. If it turns out to be as much fun to drive as the 3, the 5 should the most enjoyable minivan ever. Way to go Mazda!
