look and the way the car carries itself is completely different. Though the SUV is 150 mm (5.9 in.) longer, and rides on a 2,915 mm (114.8 in.) wheelbase, it doesn't have the same minivan-like proportions the old model was criticized for.

Aside from the more wind-swept styling, the M is 71 mm (2.8 in.) wider and 9 mm (0.4 in.) shorter than its predecessor, with more steeply raked front and rear pillars. Overall, the M's drag coefficient rating has dropped to a car-like 0.34, down from 0.39.

the M-Class can be found right under the car's skin. A new, super-stiff monocoque frame takes the place of the ladder frame chassis of the previous model. Aside from offering better crash protection, the chassis also improves the M's road manners by lowering the center of gravity and improving torsional rigidity, which should bring it closer dynamically to the BMW X5 and Cadillac SRX.

Falling in line with other high-end sport utility vehicles, Mercedes has traded in conventional steel springs for an advanced version of its computer-controlled Airmatic air suspension system. Completing the set up are double wishbones in front and a four-link layout in back.
