Aside from the more wind-swept styling, the M is 71 mm (2.8 in.) wider and 9 mm (0.4 in.) shorter than its predecessor, with more steeply raked front and rear pillars. Overall, the M's drag coefficient rating has dropped to a car-like 0.34, down from 0.39.

Falling in line with other high-end sport utility vehicles, Mercedes has traded in conventional steel springs for an advanced version of its computer-controlled Airmatic air suspension system. Completing the set up are double wishbones in front and a four-link layout in back.
