Extension of the Human Spirit
The sublimely smooth mill in this week's tester fed a manual stick, for which I was most grateful. Having gears changed by an electronic mind rather than a human-actuated foot and hand would suppress the 335i Cab's spirit. Not that BMW's paddle-activated manual-mode equipped six-speed autobox isn't a marvelous piece of technology, it is. But to be this car's true soul mate, a true stick is essential. With it, the car becomes a visceral extension of body and mind.

The ride is surprisingly smooth considering its 19-inch wheels and low profile tires.

Better ride quality than expected

I must admit that when I read the spec sheet on my tester and noted it was equipped with the 335i's Sport Package, which includes sport suspension and low-profile 19-inch high performance runflats, I fully expected an unforgiving ride; then I drove the car and was astonished. Even with said suspension and tires the 335i Cabriolet is remarkably ride compliant.

Yes, when the road surface becomes severely potted, the sport suspension and marginal sidewalls deliver a serving of abruptness to the cabin, but otherwise little noise or discomfort penetrates the impeccably assembled occupant area. So has handling competency paid the price for ride comfort? In a word- no.

Same renowned 335i handling
Auto journalists the globe-over continue to praise the 335i's outstanding handling, often using its thresholds as benchmarks against which to evaluate other vehicles. Having road tested the 335i Coupe late last year, I find no discernible deterioration in the Cabriolet's handling despite the extra poundage imparted by its retractable roof and associated gear. An on-track session might reveal such to a true purist, however slight it may be.

My tester held aggressive lines through sharp bends and long sweepers without protest or discord- just pure BMW balance and poise. Simply put, this car's superlative blend of handling ability and ride comfort is Zen-like.

Handling has always been a strong point of every BMW vehicle.
