Other details also seem to be in need of improvements. The HVAC system, for instance, is barely up to the task and, on hot days, has a hard time cooling the entire cabin. Likewise, the audio system is rudimentary and soundproofing fails to meet expectations for a passenger vehicle. I'm telling you, it's a real challenge to have a conversation with other people on board when the Sprinter is moving at mid-to-high speeds. Normal, you say? Well, sure, the interior is like a cavern but still, road noise is very present inside -- sometimes a bit too present.
Frugal yet powerful
No, I'm not kidding. The 154-hp V6 engine of the Sprinter might seem underpowered, especially considering the massive size and weight of the vehicle, but it's backed by more than 480 lb-ft of torque available at only 1,600 rpm.
The 3.0L turbocharged mill delivers surprising takeoffs and accelerations, even under heavy load. Once up to speed, however, the 154 horsepower quickly affect the vehicle's performance, particularly with a few passengers on board.
The steering is relatively precise given the outrageous size of the Sprinter. On bumpy, winding roads, you have to be able to anticipate maneuvers because the steering may take a few milliseconds to react.
You must also be careful with the suspension which, under heavy load, proves to be predictably firm -- or should I say stiff? Conversely, with no passengers and no luggage on board, you have to beware of solid rear axle hops.
Obviously, the incredible fuel economy (estimated at under 10 L/100 km) represents a clear benefit. Even with 12 occupants and a sizeable amount of gear, the Sprinter manages to maintain its high fuel-efficiency, generous torque and compliant ride.
In the end, it comes as no surprise that the Dodge Sprinter is one of the best work trucks in the business. Expect to see more of it in the upcoming years.
