The Veracruz uses an automatic all-wheel drive system developed in part by Toyoda (a Toyota subsidiary). I was unable to detect the system at work during my road test, even under the rain. The quality Michelin tires wrapping the 18-inch wheels offer excellent road grip. Another strength of the Veracruz is the engine's torque: the 256 lb-ft generated by the 260-hp, DOHC 3.8L V6 allow the vehicle to accelerate smoothly and easily ascend steep hills without forcing the autobox to downshift regularly. That said, the 6-speed automatic transmission is rather slow to downshift when it's time to pass. Again, the available torque compensates, but passing maneuvers could easily be one second quicker if the slush box reacted faster.

The 3.8L V6 is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

I managed to reach 100 km/h in 10 seconds and to sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in 7 seconds. These are pretty decent performance figures, you might say, but when the vehicle is fully loaded, accelerations will most likely be slower. It's not a question of speed but rather safety. Meanwhile, the average fuel consumption should not drop too often below 14 L/100 km. Finally, braking seemed solid and progressive.

Models and prices
Only two models are available in Canada: GLS ($39,995) and Limited ($45,995). Hyundai Canada chose to offer a comprehensive list of standard features instead of an endless option menu that would rapidly increase the vehicle's price. Smart decision. Buyers will know what to expect from the start, and that's a versatile, comfortable, luxurious yet affordably priced crossover.
