Convenience and versatility
The Veracruz offers great interior liveability for a family of five who often has to drive around with the grandparents or the kids' soccer teammates. Access to both the second and third row of seating is fairly easy. The third-row seat, actually, is accessed in a flash thanks to the 60/40 split-folding second-row bench that slides fore and aft and includes two well-positioned handles.

Access to the third row is fairly easy.

On the other hand, the absence of exterior side-steps makes exiting the third-row seat a bit more complicated, especially for adults. Leave those places to your acrobatic teenagers and enjoy the generous room provided by the second row. Up front, the environment is remarkably quiet, although the noise coming from the rear tires is tad too invasive. Moreover, all rear seatbacks fold completely flat so you can benefit from great versatility. In fact, the Veracruz offers the largest available cargo volume in its class.

Very comfortable
Comfort is one of the main qualities of this new crossover, both for front and rear passengers. Road anomalies are efficiently soaked up and neutralized. Hyundai paid special attention to the rear shock absorbers to ensure that everyone remains comfortable, which is pretty rare among the competition. Of course, the Limited model takes comfort to another level, but the automaker did not skimp on amenities and luxury features in the GLS model. A quick look at the standard equipment is enough to realize that buyers get a superbly well equipped vehicle. Storage compartments and cupholders are aplenty, while the audio system is impressive.

The Limited model adds leather seating, keyless entry, a power-assisted rear tailgate as well as luxury trim. There is also an entertainment unit, but the monitor is mounted too close to the passengers. For the moment, there are no navigation systems or rearview cameras on the menu -- standard or optional. I was also disappointed to find out that the radio doesn't include an auxiliary input for iPods.

Handing and performance
The vehicle's drive feels highly safe. I was surprised by the ride quality because I expected a more spongy feel. Surely enough, the Veracruz remains very stable, even in tight turns. The engineers have incorporated large stabilizer bars to control bodyroll and gas shock absorbers to optimize the damping.

The Veracruz offers surprising handling.
