Good performance
Weighing 2,000+ kilos (4,500+ lbs), the CX-9 GT with all-wheel drive accelerates from a standstill to 100 kph in less than 10 seconds (with two passengers on board). Passing maneuvers (80-120 kph sprints) are done in under 8 seconds. The brakes deliver a constant and strong performance, allowing stopping distances of 43 metres from 100 kph--another important safety feature. The CX-9 can also tow a 1,588-kg (3,500 lb) load. In terms of fuel economy, Mazda claims a 14.5 L/100 km rating in the city. Personally, I achieved 15 L/100 km in combined city-highway driving, which confirms the numbers provided by Natural Resources Canada.

The streamlined side windows are not at all convenient for certain maneuvers.

Problematic visibility

When you have to run errands, the vehicle's versatility and cargo capacity come in quite handy, as do the folding seatbacks. Depending on the seat configuration, the CX-9 can swallow between 487 and 2,871 litres of cargo. However, the fun ends when you have to park the vehicle. Indeed, you're constantly asking yourself if there is enough space, if the passenger's side will be clear enough or if you'll hit something. More often than not, you need someone else's help to correctly align the vehicle, because the side windows are so narrow and there are virtually no points of reference. At least my GT model was equipped with the Luxury and Navigation packages, which meant that I could rely on the backup camera and sensors to guide me. These features should come standard on every CX-9. The man and woman who I lent the vehicle to for a quick road test also made this remark.

Ambivalence
In conclusion, I must say that I have mixed feelings about the CX-9. I find the lack of visibility to be a major drawback. Yet, the road manners, handling and performance are up to Mazda's reputation. Also, the interior liveability and versatility are tantamount to a minivan's. Just make sure you perform a comprehensive road test before purchasing a CX-9.
