Most car companies always look for unchartered market segments in which they can offer new models to attract a larger audience. The next big thing - literally - appears to be the full-size crossover SUV segment. Spearheaded by GM's trio of Saturn Outlook/Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia,

which will be launched as 2007 and 2008 models, this type of vehicles will build upon the success of regular crossovers by adding more space and versatility.

Japanese automaker Mazda will also be joining the dance with its all-new CX-9, first showcased at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Larger than the CX-7 which recently hit the showrooms, the CX-9 is nearly identical in styling. The only differences worth mentioning are newly designed taillights, more subtle fenders and a less swooping front end. Both models were designed and engineered specifically for the North American market. But whereas the CX-7 is built on a compact platform, the CX-9 will benefit from the mid-sized Mazda6's chassis.

Inspired by Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" philosophy and "Soul of a Sportscar" signature, the CX-9 offers sporty driving dynamics with seven-passenger SUV practicality. This is why, according to company, it will target active young couples and modern folks with a focus on family interests.

Unlike the CX-7, there won't be a turbocharged engine under the hood - at least not at first. The CX-9 will rather use a new 3.5-liter V6 engine

borrowed from Ford (with a preliminary rating of 250 horsepower). A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, while front- and all-wheel drive are available. The vehicle will ride on 18 or 20-inch wheels depending on the version.

To help avoid accidents, the CX-9 is fitted with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS). Those brakes, by the way, consist of large ventilated discs on all four wheels.

The Mazda CX-9 will be produced in Japan and is expected to arrive in dealerships in early 2007.
