Both versions of the Boxster will benefit from more powerful engines for 2007, as well as an updated Tiptronic S transmission and improved functionality of the Sport Chrono package.

The engine of the Boxster S gets enlarged from 3.2 to 3.4 liters, its horsepower peak rising from 280 to 295 horsepower. Torque is also up by 15 pound-feet to 251. If this new engine sounds familiar, it's because it's currently found in the Cayman S. Porsche estimates 0-100 km/h times of 5.4 seconds, a 10th of a second quicker than the 2006 model. Top speed is now 272 km/h, up from 269.

The base Boxster's 2.7-liter flat-six gets another 5 horses for a total of 245. Torque rises from 199 pound-feet to 201, and offers a broader torque curve from 4,600 to 6,000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.8 seconds, and top speed is 258 km/h. With the optional six-speed manual instead of the standard five, top speed rises to 260 km/h.

The optional Tiptronic S automatic is revised for 2007 with improved responsiveness, and provides variable shift programs. According to Porsche, the combination of the Tiptronic with the optional Sport Chrono Package enhances the sporting characteristics of both Boxster models. "With the Sport mode engaged, up- and downshifts are only made at engine speeds above 3000 rpm, and downshifts for engine braking are subject to less delay and take place at higher engine speeds. In the manual-shift mode, up-shifts are not made automatically when the engine reaches its rev limiter."

Other improvements include a standard-equipment tire pressure monitor system and better service access with relocated coolant and oil filler caps, which in turn offer a more useful trunk. 19-inch, two-tone alloy wheels, developed for the new 911 Turbo, are available on both Boxster models.

The 2007 Boxster should arrive in showrooms in August, but no Canadian pricing has been announced yet.
