If the mk5 Golf is on its way that means that the all-new GTI is also coming. The last generation GTI lacked some critical feel that the original GTI had when it first came out in the early 1980s. This newest version is the ultimate incarnation of the real thing.

The GTI receives the turbocharged direct-injection 2.0L I-4 shared with the Jetta, Passat, A3 and A4. It puts out 200 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque. Transmission choices reside between a 6-speed DSG sequential manual and a conventional 6-speed manual. The list of safety features is impressive: 6 air bags, traction and stability control, active headrests, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and assist.

This is a driver's car and it looks the part too. It has an electronic differential lock, 17" alloys, blacked-out grille, a roof-mounted spoiler and the all-important red GTI badge.

Body configurations include a 3-door and 5-door hatchback.
