Over the last few years, the blue-oval auto giant suffered its fair share of setbacks. Several models, like the supposedly revolutionary Five Hundred sedan, turned out to be utter failures in terms of sales. To make matters worse, the Explorer midsize SUV is starting to get shunned by American consumers. It now trails the smaller Honda CR-V on the sales charts, after more than a decade at the top. Rising gas prices have obviously played a huge part. Finally, while the F-150 remains the best-selling pick-up truck in North America, sales are going down due to the market's fragmentation.

This Ford crossover stands out from the competition with a unique design.

That's why the Edge crossover is so important for the automaker. So far, it's mission accomplished: sales of the Edge exceed those of GM's three crossovers combined (Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia). This trio will be joined later this year by a new model called the Chevrolet Traverse. Yet, it's safe to assume that Ford will maintain its lead for quite a while.

Unique styling
Sure enough, this Ford crossover stands out from the competition with a unique design. Sleek, organic lines give it a taut look masking the vehicle's sizeable girth. As a true member of the Ford family, the Edge also sports the triple-slat chrome grille originally introduced by the Fusion sedan and now used as the visual corporate identity.

By rejecting the H-shaped grille, Ford designers wanted to emphasize the fact that their crossover handles more like a car than a truck. On the other hand, the Edge boasts wing-like headlights similar to the rest of Ford's truck lineup.

Meanwhile, the interior is totally unique. The beauty of the layout is worth mentioning, even though plastics are a bit too present and material quality could be improved. Fit and finish also leaves a little to be desired. Ford could have done better, especially when compared to rivals.
