Meanwhile, the steering is very precise and makes up for the lack of motoring prowess. It offers a genuine, car-like driving experience, which is somewhat surprising given the size of the CX-9. Similar praise goes to the suspension, which does a great job of soaking up road imperfections and providing superior comfort to passengers. Even better, the suspension is firm enough to allow dynamic handling with little bodyroll.

Overall, the CX-9 handles like a sedan (that's right), but in a much larger, family-oriented package. I did however find the braking system a bit complicated to get used to; among other things, the pedal requires extra effort at the beginning of its stroke.

The dashboard is pleasant to look at. Fit and finish is flawless.

Quality fit and finish

Inside, the CX-9 sets itself apart by offering genuine comfort and flawless build quality. In terms of layout, the dashboard is basically the same as in the CX-7 and other Mazda products. The chrome-ringed gauges and two-tone interior combine to create a modern, aesthetically perfect environment with no extravaganzas. All seating positions are comfortable and supportive; even the third-row bench can accommodate any body size for any length of trip.

Obviously, when said third row is occupied, the available cargo room is significantly reduced. You'll have to be extremely creative if you want to fit seven passengers' worth of luggage. In addition, the cargo threshold might be a bit high for smaller people who try to load their gear onto the floor. Yet, when it's all said and done, the CX-9's cargo capacity beyond the third row is greater than the average for seven-passenger SUVs.

Traditional minivan buyers will be highly satisfied with this large crossover, which serves as a different, more modern and more refined alternative. Actually, Mazda entertains so much hope for the versatile CX-9 that company executives decided to terminate the MPV minivan.

In the end, driving this big rig is more akin to driving a sedan than a truck (the turning radius is remarkably tight). What's more, the sensations behind the wheel are more pleasant than those of the average competitor. The toughest pills to swallow might very well be the asking price and fuel economy (worse than most), especially for the all-wheel drive model (the base CX-9 comes standard with front-wheel drive). Still, for family wagon drivers who dream of owning a sporty vehicle, the newest Mazda will certainly please your entire family while fulfilling most of your driving desires.
